The excitement in our house has been growing all week - Halloween was finally here! To my dismay - the news also was reporting that we would also be getting our first measurable snowfall! Now don't get me wrong, I have been born and raised in Wisconsin. I have always envied those that can go trick or treating in just their costume without having to worry about how they could avoid freezing; as the rule of thumb in Wisconsin is to try to buy a costume that you can fit layers or your coat under. Also keep in mind, just because I am from Wisconsin doesn't mean I enjoy trudging through the snow. In fact, in my perfect world, it would snow heavily the two weeks leading up to Christmas - and then after New Year’s we would be in our thaw. Unfortunately - mother nature rarely sees things as I do.
So, we awake Thursday morning to snow falling - nothing absolutely crazy, but if the weathermen are right - it isn't supposed to get crazy til 10am. I start my devising my plan - I am not above bribery! "Mom will buy you all a WHOLE BAG of the candy of your choice if we don't have to go trick or treating. I will order pizza, we will have black cows, and we can have a family picnic in the living room and watch Halloweentown! Doesn't that sound like fun?" Wouldn't you know not one of the three kids thought my offer sounded better then walking through the 4-6 inches of cold, wet, white flurries of sadness that would surely be on the ground by the time trick or treat started. In fact, my sweet boy who lives for the snow and Trick-or-Treat thought this was surely going to be the best day ever- as not only was it the day that he could collect morsels of sugar, but it was also the first snowfall of the year! Oh Yay! (Clearly, he does not get his love of the winter wonderland from me.)
Being that it is Red Ribbon week, the kids got to wear their costumes to school – “Say Boo to Drugs” or something catchy like that. After I get them all out of the house I get one of the most beautiful text messages from my sister-in-law “Do the kids want to come Trick-or-Treating with us, Jason will pick them up off the bus, and we will drop them off when we are done.” Hallelujah! Someone up above saw the struggle this morning – so how bad I was bribing – saw the pure resistance I was getting and had my truly amazing, wonderful, and magnificent like sister and brother in law reach out with the Halloween Miracle.
By the time Uncle Jason comes to pick up the kids from the bus stop, we both realize that the weatherman for once is spot on and we have at least 5 inches of snow on the ground. Being that Halloween is his favorite holiday though, this doesn’t seem to even phase him. He is all smiles, excited to get the kids and start the fun (God bless him, and God bless us for having him!) After he leaves the bus stop, I send him the cartoon of two bundled up kids with a sign that clearly marks what they are dressed up as for Halloween since you can’t tell due to the winter gear. Without skipping a beat my sister in law says, “I’m on it!” So here they are – some of the cutest kids I know: a butterfly, a werewolf, master chief, and Cinderella. You’ll have to take my word for it- but I swear underneath all those layers there are costumes.
